BETTER PRODUCTIVITY WITH MIND THE TIME
If you're anything like me -- and if you are, you have my deepest sympathy -- you probably find that a significant portion of your day can get sucked into the vortex of Internet browsing. Before you know it, it's 3pm, you're starting to think about the end of the day and all that you've accomplished and realise... hang on, what? It's three o'clock? There was all that stuff I wanted to do today and all I've actually been doing is mindlessly clicking through the Daily Mail's Sidebar of Shame. Gaahhh!
Unless you have inhuman willpower or are faced with a sufficiently frightening deadline that simply can't be put back, it can be almost impossible to spend a whole day at your computer doing something worthwhile.
But that's okay, because what I'm about to share with you is indeed inhuman. It's a simple, free software add-on to your browser that will help you be a bit more mindful of how you're spending your time. And that's all you need, really, isn't it? Just something that helps you actually realise how you're trickling your time away.
It’s called Mind The Time and, once you’ve downloaded it, runs quietly just under your browser window. What does it do? It simply times your browsing activity. There’s a ticking clock that won’t let you get away with kidding yourself that today’s journey over to Facebook is only going to be five minutes (instead of the hour it actually turns out to be).
Here's a screen grab of where to find the Mind The Time clock:

See it there? Second thing in from the left, reading "0:19 / 0:24". And here's what you see when you click the clock:
It's a results page that opens in a new browser tab and gives you a percentage breakdown of how your time has been spent. Lucky for me that I only switched it on 20 minutes ago; my results for the whole of today would otherwise have been just too depressing and you'd have lost all of the remaining respect you might have had for me.
Sounds a bit too simple? Not sure how meaningful it’d be? Believe me, when you’ve used it for a day you’ll be shocked at how much time you’ve spent mindlessly surfing and will be an awful lot more productive. Here's the link:
